🇳🇬 Tiwa Savage, full name Tiwatope Omolara Savage, was born on February 5, 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria. At the age of 11, she moved to London to receive her secondary education, and five years later, she began her music career as a backing vocalist for artists such as George Michael and Mary J. Blige. After participating in the British version of The X Factor and graduating from Berklee College of Music, Savage signed a contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009.
Inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music scene, she returned to Nigeria and signed with Mavin Records in 2012. In July 2013, she released her debut studio album "Once Upon a Time," which was nominated for several prestigious awards. In December 2015, her second album "R.E.D" was released, supported by singles like "My Darlin" and "Standing Ovation." In June 2016, Savage signed with Roc Nation, becoming the first Nigerian artist to secure a deal with the label.
Tiwa Savage has also actively collaborated with various artists. She worked on projects with Jaikoe featuring Snoop Dogg, Kat DeLuna, Fantasia, Monica, and Mýa, and was involved in Coldplay's album "Everyday Life." Under Mavin Records, she contributed to the compilation album "Solar Plexus" and collaborated with artists like Don Jazzy, Olamide, Dr. Sid, Iceberg Slim, 2Baba, D'Prince, Busy Signal, and Reekado Banks. Her debut EP "Sugarcane" (2017) features collaborations with Wizkid, Spellz, Baby Fresh, Maleek Berry, and P2J.
In September 2017, Tiwa released her first EP "Sugarcane," which was nominated for awards in Nigeria. In November 2018, she became the first woman to win the Best African Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards. In May 2019, she signed with Universal Music Group, leaving Mavin Records.
In August 2020, Savage released her third studio album "Celia," which received critical acclaim and was listed in Time's top 10 albums of the year. In August 2021, her second EP "Water & Garri" was released, blending Afrobeat and soul R&B. In March 2022, Tiwa announced a North American tour in support of this EP.
In July 2022, she received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Kent for her achievements in music. In February 2023, Savage announced the production of a film "Water and Garri," inspired by the EP of the same name, in which she also played the lead role. On May 7, 2023, she performed at the Coronation Concert for King Charles III, showcasing her Nigerian identity.
